Time-Block Planner

Cal Newport’s book Deep Work was very impactful to the way I approached my work. I started focusing less on the trivial tasks and more on the projects that made a difference.

My email inbox dictated my work for the day.  I was very reactive to the requests of others and had little to no time to work on anything else.  The day-to-day tasks consumed my time and attention.

What Did I Change?

After reading Deep Work, I had a conversation with my manager and discussed some projects that I felt would have a positive impact on our organization.  We agreed on some projects, which included the automation of SQL reports to assist staff, creating a college internship program, and writing a grant to help protect children.

In order to work on these projects, I had to fundamentally change my approach to work.  I started closing my inbox and blocking off my time.  With this improved approach, I had the time to focus on these projects and make a difference.

During the COVID pandemic, Cal started a podcast, which also modified my approach to work.  He introduced the Time-Block Planner which I immediately purchased.

Time-Block Planner ExampleI really appreciate how Cal describes the methods for using this planner.  Having space for corrections really helped me regroup and stay on track.  Previously, I would set a plan and then get frustrated when I could not stick to the plan.  With multiple columns, its nice having room for corrections.

Each morning by sitting with my Time-Block Planner and reviewing my day.  I fill-in the calendar appointments and pre-scheduled meetings.  Then, I fill the rest of my time with the projects I need to work on.  Using the Time-Block Planner has helped me stay on track and get more important work done.  I am able to be more intentional with my time, which helps me waste far less time.

If you have not attempted Time-Blocking, please consider the practice.  It will enable you to do more and spend time on the things that truly matter.
